Why We Do Things This Way

The Son of Man came not to be served but to serve. – Matthew 20:28

Central’s lay ministry system  is a key part of our strategy to fulfill the church’s mission: "to be and to make disciples for Jesus Christ." (AKA "The Great Commission"- see Matthew 28:19-20)

Christ and Central Church need everyone's gifts to help fulfill the Great Commission, and we invite people to find their places of service for Christ at Central Church. Knowing that Christ calls us to serve, the ministry of Central Presbyterian Church rests firmly in the belief that God prepares us for service by giving us Spiritual Gifts.

Central's Ministry Values:

  • We understand that ministry is a team effort, with the people and pastors working as partners to expand God’s influence in the church and the world.
  • We believe that every Christian has a calling for ministry, whether as an ordained pastor or a lay (non-ordained) minister.
  • We recognize that the ministry of the pastors can reach only a few people at a time, whereas the ministry of many people has greater impact on the church and the world.
  • We believe that God gives Spiritual Gifts and that we are accountable for employing them in service to God and the church.
  • We want people to be satisfied and joyful, learning and growing while serving in ministry, rather than feeling that they are being used just to get a job done.
  • We need everyone’s participation to fulfill the church’s calling to make disciples for Jesus Christ.
