For the next 8 weeks, I would like for all of us to individually participate in a wellness  program titled Get My People Going.  The goal is to have all God’s people enjoy a healthy lifestyle.  Not everyone can run a marathon, walk a mile or get out of a chair.  Yet, most everyone can find some way to make their lives healthier, be it through armchair   exercises, drinking more water or spending more time with a friend.

This program asks you to define your own barriers to good health practices.  You are asked to focus on three areas of your choice to improve, and to share your progress with a buddy.

What areas of your life is God calling to your attention?  Choose three from the list below, share with your buddy and continue going in the direction of wholeness of body, mind, spirit and community.

1. I need more exercise.

2. I need to drink more water.

3. I need to stop smoking

4. I need to eat more fruits and vegetables.

5. I need to lose some weight.

6. I need to get more sleep.

7. I need to spend more time with friends.

8. I need more purpose in life.

9. I need to deepen my spiritual life.

10. Other: ___________________________.

Which direction is your promised land?  You can’t travel in all directions and get anywhere.  You have to make choices and head that way.  Likewise, you can’t change all areas of your life at once.  You may have checked several items that you would like to change, but it is recommended that you choose three and focus on those three areas for the next eight weeks.

Write your top three choices for change here:

1._______________________________________________

2._______________________________________________

3._______________________________________________

From Reverend Jeff Cover...

We asked for your input—and we got it!  Thanks to the 51 of you who took the time to fill out our adult  education surveys. You gave us a boatload of ideas and some essential feedback, and we are grateful for your encouragement and suggestions.

I thought you might be interested in some of the results.  First, the demographics of those who completed the survey.  Not everyone answered every question, but of those who did, 38 have participated in our classes at some point, and 8 have not.  Sixteen of those who have participated do so regularly, and 24 occasionally.  The age group break-down was fascinating:

18-30 year olds: 2

21-40 year olds: 5

41-50 year olds: 3

51-60 year olds: 8

Those 60+: 30

These results confirmed an impression that we had, that we need to involve our younger members in adult classes!  We are grateful for our older participants, but need to do more to encourage the participation of our younger members who don’t seem to have the Sunday School habit.

When we looked at length of membership, a different trend emerged. We had 3 responses from those who’ve been here 0-1 year, 13 responses from those who’ve been here 2-5 years, 4 responses from those who’ve been here 6-10 years, and 30 responses from those who’ve been here 11+ years.  This distribution indicates that we are getting a good number of participants who are relatively new here.  So, our newer members are well represented in our class participation, along with our steady long-time participants.

We received many far-ranging suggestions for class topics, and we will take these seriously.  Once again, we were impressed with the breadth of interests at Central!

In terms of the general categories of content you prefer, here are the results:

Theology/Current Issues: 38

Bible: 31

Prayer/Spirituality: 28

Life Stage Issues: 25

Arts/Culture: 16

Except for the last category, there seems to be broad-based interest in most topics.  As theology and current issues were the clear preference, we will have several offerings in the coming year in this category.  We are also committed to offering classes in the area of Bible study, prayer/spirituality and life stage issues.

We received a number of helpful suggestions for teachers, some repeat teachers, and some new ones.  Of particular interest to us was the observation that we need to offer classes at other times than Sunday morning.  Particularly this was true for Traditional choir members and our children’s Sunday School teachers.  When we offer classes at different times this year we are counting on those two groups to be well represented as participants!  We are looking into evening formats for some classes.

We also realized we need to do a better job of publicizing the classes from the pulpit, having a regular place where they are publicized in Central Press, and in conveying class content and relevance more consistently.

Thanks to all of you for your input.  We look forward to seeing you at the Fall Kick Off breakfast on Sunday, August 10 at 10a.  There you will learn about our  offerings for the fall for children, youth and adults.  I think you’ll be pleased with the variety of our offerings.  Jeff
